Herpes zoster is the medical name for shingles. The shingles are caused by the herpes zoster virus that causes chickenpox in children. Irritation or swelling of the conjunctiva (thin membrane covering the front part of the eye), eye allergy, tear disorder, eye discharge, inflammation of the iris (coloured part of the eye) or eyelid, deposits in the eye, bacterial infection or inflammation of the cornea (transparent front part of the eye), abrasion to the outer layer of the cornea, whitish patches on the cornea, cyst in the eyelid, itching in the eyelid, painful rash around the eye caused by the herpes zoster virus. Unlike a bacterial infection which causes a red eye and a mucopurulent (mucous and pus) discharge and usually affects both eyes, the HZ eye infection is inside the eye. Do not pass it on to others. A more severe injury, such as that caused by a caustic chemical, can produce an ulcer in the absence of infection. It may affect the eyes.
• For ocular use only. To be used, therefore, under strict medical supervision. It also cuts down the risk of developing post herpetic neuralgia. Shingles may also affect your eye, causing blurred vision and discomfort. The first sign that the reactivated virus has spread to nerve endings is a burning or tingling pain, most often in the trunk area around the ribs and waist. Notice, the rash and blisters stop at the middle of the patient’s forehead. You may also experience difficulty moving the muscles of your face or have difficulty with eye movements.
Caffeine is a stimulant found in a variety of foods, beverages and medications such as pain relievers and cold medicines. Therefore, you should remove your contact lenses at bedtime before using IKERVIS; you can reinsert them when you wake up. However, caffeine could increase your anxiety level, which may intensify the stress factors in your life. Painkillers (such as acetaminophen) and lubricating eyedrops may lessen your pain. Topical NSAIDs are also known to slow or delay healing. However, in a number of shingles sufferers, flare-ups continue to occur. If you have recurring shingles and consume a significant amount of caffeine throughout the day, you and your doctor may discuss gradually reducing your caffeine intake to determine if this helps reduce the frequency of your flare-ups.
If you have shingles, your doctor will prescribe an antiviral medication to help reduce the duration of your condition. Herbal salves and teas can ease pain and hasten healing. Eye involvement may require eye drops to help clear the infection and inflammation in the eye. Contact your doctor at the first signs of shingles. Prompt treatment can often help reduce the duration and intensity of your symptoms; using eye drop promptly for eye-related shingles may help prevent permanent scarring that could result in permanent vision loss. This helps to stop IKERVIS getting into the rest of the body. This will help prevent withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and irritability.
