Umbilical cord blood (UCB) has been a reasonable alternative to granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized peripheral blood or bone marrow, as a source of hematopoietic stem cells with a lower risk of graft-versus-host disease. By cocultivating samples with phytohemagglutinin-P-stimulated cord blood mononuclear cells, HHV-7 was isolated from the saliva of 1 of 20 children and from 4 of 38 adults but not from their blood. Plasma and PBMC were obtained from 31 PR patients (14 children, 17 adults), 12 patients with other dermatites, and 36 blood donors. The laboratory monitoring to 180 days after transplantation was performed by nested-polymerase chain reaction to HCMV or HHV-7. The PCR detected a HHV-6 prevalence of 9.8%, with HHV-6A detected in 7.1% of the samples and HHV-6B in 2.7%. HHV-7 DNA was revealed in 12.6% of the studied cases. No HHV-6 could be isolated from any samples, whereas, in the present study, HHV-7 could be isolated as 90.0% from children and as 20.0-54.5% from adults.

To clarify this matter, we performed PCR to detect viruses in adenoid tissues removed by adenoidectomy. Compared to studies from other countries, low prevalence rates of herpesvirus DNA were detected in saliva from the healthy individuals in our sample. The long coevolution of herpesviruses with their hosts has resulted in the development of a diverse array of viral immune evasion strategies and host counter-strategies.
