The total and fractioned titres of circulating anticytomegalovirus (CMV) and antiherpesvirus (HSV) antibodies were evaluated in 63 idiopathic ulcerative proctocolitis patients in follow-up. Procedure A utilized infectious virus propagated in mouse cells, and procedure B utilized mouse cells infected with herpes simplex virus in the presence of cycloheximide and harvested 1 h after removal of the inhibitor. Synergism of certain antibody combinations in dose–effect assays has been previously demonstrated. The sensitivity and specificity of the screening assay and of the assay for type-specific antibodies were established. After data were controlled for several markers of sexual activity (such as number of sex partners, human immunodeficiency virus infection, and past episode(s) of gonorrhea), it appeared that the decline in HSV seroprevalence was explained by a concurrent decrease in the presence of these markers. By following the serum titer after a primary infection, we have found that 12 out of 19 persons studied had detectable dTK antibodies after an average time of 179 days.
