Herpes Early Detection Test / IgM - Herpes Message Board

Wait, are you saying that both results are IgM tests, not IgG tests? Hi Doc – I had protected sex with a sex worker 5-6 weeks ago. Sixty-six children with fever, focal seizures, and consciousness disturbance had their sera examined for anti-herpes simplex viral immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. 16 days later, I went in for a comprehensive STD test panel, including the early detection Herpes test. Everything came back negative (including the IgG tests for HSV-1 and HSV-2), except for a “low scoring” positive test for the Herpes IgM test. I have had hsv-2 positive girlfriends in the past, but never had symptoms, including over 10 years of marriage. Although most sera were not tested in the early stage, all were collected on admission day.

which I am going to do but waiting is so scary. The only thing is, I was told that it *may* be a false positive, as it was “barely” positive. I was also told that a variety of factors can cause a false positive, such as having the following situations: chicken pox, measels, mumps, mono, shingles, high levels of stress. I have had chicken pox (terribly bad case) when I was a child, mono twice – and the second time I had mono I was told that I also had the mumps and strep throat at the same time. And I also was living with a past boyfriend while he had full blown shingles and slept in the same bed at the same time, and applied his topical cream for him (while wearing gloves). I’ve had absolutely none of the symptoms I’ve been reading about online since I had sex, and its been 3 weeks and 1 day since my exposure. I know sometimes it takes longer for them to occur…

but I am (obviously) freaking out. I have had several bad cancre sores before, but they’ve all occured a long time PRIOR to this event… and I’d think that if that was oral herpes, I would’ve tested positive to IgG. Is it really possible that it could just be a crossover false positive due to my medical history? Could I not be infected at all? I know I won’t know for sure, but I’m the type of person who will worry themselves sick and into an ulcer.
