The capsid proteins of papillomavirus self-assemble to form empty capsids or virus-like particles that appear quite similar to naturally occurring virions by conventional electron microscopy. Each virus was inoculated into two ponies by the intranasal route. To map and characterize the 4.4-kb E mRNA and the protein product of this early gene (IR2 gene), Northern (RNA) blot hybridization, S1 nuclease, primer extension, and in vitro transcription and translation analyses were used. Restriction endonuclease digestion profiles of pure DI DNA were completely different from the mapped patterns observed for EHV-1 STD DNA. Rumors quickly began circulating that California would close its borders to inbound horses, but officials at the California Department of Food and Agriculture said it’s too early to tell exactly how big the impact will be on in-state horses. Expression of these viral DNA sequences as demonstrated by the detection of virus-neutralizing antibodies, 50% neutralizing dose titers ranging from 1:50 to 1:1,000, in the sera of animals inoculated with either the virus-producing transformed cells or the virus-nonproducing tumor cells.
Analysis of this protein revealed amino acid sequence homologies of 47% with HSV-1 gB, 54% with pseudorabies virus gpII, 51% with varicella-zoster virus gpII, 29% with human cytomegalovirus gB, and 30% with Epstein-Barr virus gB. Equine herpesvirus type 1 causes epidemic abortion in mares, the birth of weak nonviable foals, or a sporadic paralytic neurologic disease (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy-EHM) secondary to vasculitis of the spinal cord and brain. Both EHV-1 and EHV-4 spread via aerosolized secretions from infected coughing horses, by direct and indirect (fomite) contact with nasal secretions, and, in the case of EHV-1, contact with aborted fetuses, fetal fluids, and placentae associated with abortions.
