COMMENTARY. The name was given by the neurologist Constantin Von Economo in 1916. He was finally released from the hospital on December 11th but at that point he was out of control, confused, etc. Little is known about EBV encephalitis in adults. For more than 20 years, herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been recognized as an important cause of recurrent infections (genital, dermal, and ocular) of immunologically competent hosts; often, spread of the virus in compromised patients produces life-threatening systemic disease (1, 3, 5, 6, 7). Paitent is currently receiving IV acyclovir for treatment. Results: Antibodies (≥1) were detected in 27/100 initially-submitted herpes virus-positive CSFs (unclassified neural antibodies [UNAs], 15; antinuclear antibody, 12; smooth muscle antibody [SMA], 10; NMDA-R antibody, 1; and gastric parietal cell antibody, 1) and in 2/6 follow-up CSFs (AMPA-R antibody, 1; UNA and SMA, 1).

Polymerase chain reaction assays designed to detect HSV in CSF should detect HSV-1 and HSV-2 and differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2. Reports subjective fevers. Although WD is a systemic illness, it may present with signs and symptoms isolated to gastrointestinal, cardiac, or central nervous systems.1 Approximately 33% of patients with WD experience neurologic symptoms, including encephalopathy, ophthalmoplegia, myoclonus, ataxia, upper motor neuron signs, and hypothalamic manifestations, among others. On exam, low grade temp with tachycardia, no neurological deficits/ muscle weakness noted but there was exquisite tenderness on superficial palpation over medial aspect of L thigh assoc with swelling.
