We have previously reported the isolation of HHV-6 from saliva samples. Eighteen out of 20 whole saliva samples contained detectable HHV-6 genomes. In such instances, virological verification relies on detection of VZV DNA or anti-VZV IgG antibody in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or less often, the presence of VZV DNA in blood mononuclear cells or anti-VZV IgM antibody in serum or CSF. We confirm the finding of frequent isolation of HHV-7 from saliva of healthy adults and report the first dual isolation of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and HHV-7 from a single saliva specimen. The results of two studies using a rapid and semi-quantitative lateral flow assay format demonstrating the correlation of HIV anti-IgG/sIgA detection with saliva and serum samples are presented. Detailed genomic analysis revealed the presence of gene homologs to all 84 known HHV-7 ORFs. HIV seropositivity correlated positively with the presence of CMV (OR: 18.2, p= 0.00032) and EBV (OR: 3.44, p= 0.0081).
The high prevalence of HHV-6 DNA in PBMCs and saliva supports the concept that HHV-6 exists at these sites in normal individuals. These findings suggest the asymptomatic salivary shedding of HHVs is a common event between HIV-seropositive and seronegative individuals from Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, and, especially for HIV-seropositive patients, saliva is a risk factor for the acquisition/transmission of multiple HHVs.
