Blood safety and sufficiency are major challenges in Kenya and other sub-Saharan African countries forcing many countries to rely on family replacement donors (FRD). Both cats are around 5 weeks old and weigh just one pound each. Recently in our area 3 litters of Labradoodles were born in the same household. Results: Adjusted HHV-8 seroprevalence at ‘medium to high’ antibody titres (at least 1:51,200) increased with age, from 2% (age 15–24; 95% CI=0.7–5.2) to 10% (age 45+; 95% CI=6.3–15.2). It is a double stranded DNA virus belonging to the herpes virus family. By comparing these two results, we calculated that there were between two and five copies of HHV-6 present per cell in these four donors. Physicians who care for immunosuppressed patients and those who are responsible for institutional infection-control practices should remain informed of the growing body of literature on LR.

All samples were HHV-6 variant B. In addition, a retrospective analysis of all diagnostic blood samples performed for HHV-6 in our center showed a prevalence of 2.9% of high viral loads characteristic of integration. At any one time, the lesions of the rash vary in stages of development. The presence of high HHV-6 viral loads in healthy normal individuals reiterates the need to consider the confounding effect of HHV-6 viral integration in any laboratory diagnosis of HHV-6 infection.
