SAN FRANCISCO — A  high school student and athlete from the San Francisco Bay Area says he contracted a highly contagious form of herpes during a wrestling match. You might be able to tell by the name that it’s related to wrestling. In other words, things can get funky in there, and a wrestler can become a veritable petri dish for bacteria, viruses and infections. He’s concerned he could have spread the infection to other wrestlers during recent practice sessions. Flovin went to a meet in San Jose and came in contact with it, either on another player or even a mat. “The rules and the swiftness in the way they deal with skin issues in wrestling is flawed and kids and coaches try to skirt around the issues,” Blake said Wednesday. Part of the reason Blake and his dad are so concerned, is that they met with dermatologists when Blake’s face was starting to break out in small red lesions, and they were misdiagnosed as acne. The family is concerned more kids will be inadequately treated, though they all have to pass a skin test before stepping onto the mats.
